I arrived in Beijing traveling without my passport. The hotel did not want to let Me check in but my colleagues convinced them I was okay. Now I just have to get back on the plane Sunday. Gisella and I spent the day doing store visits. We Even went to Walmart so exciting.

Which Way am I going? Entry and Exit Bureau…

ExitandEntrybureauBureau of Coming and Going…

Just spent a rainy afternoon at the Entry and Exit Bureau in Shanghai(yes that is what this huge building is called).  This building is for all foreigners to register with the police to gain the Residency VISA. The place is super busy with people and police all over the place.  They asked my interpreter a few questions which he answered for me-which I think he did well because the officer smiled at me.

At the end of the meeting, we had to provide copies of my residency registration, 400 RMBs, my photo, working paper application and finally I had to surrender my passport.  Since, I am planning to attend a meeting in Beijing this weekend it could be an issue so the travel colleagues are working on this…they think it will be okay.  Yikes-this blog may be coming to you from another location next week.

Week One Summary – Friday

Pedestrians Do Not Have the Right of Way…

shanghai_trafficAs I close on the first week of this adventure, I have learned a lot and have a lot more to learn.  The culture is very different and fascinating.

In my previous trips to China, I found crossing the street to be a life threatening event.  I decided to ask my colleagues why drivers don’t stop for people in the cross walks.  The answer is that in China,  pedestrians  do not have the right of way

When crossing the streets in Shanghai, the cars and busses turning into you(yes they do) assume that you will get out of the way.   The drivers in my office told me that no one stops.  They all believe, due to the magnitude of the people on the streets, that if they let the pedestrians go in front of their cars or trucks, that they never be able to start driving again.  Lesson learned.

Along my trip coming from my hotel to the Office, I have seen many beautiful and interesting Shanghai fashions.  My walk takes me through the equivalent of 5th Avenue.  Shanghai is the heart of fashion and cosmopolitan living in China, just like New York City in the US.

Sign up for my newsletter and write your comments.  Its great to hear from you… keeps me closer to home.

Mastering Chopsticks…

It takes Total Concentration…

DinnerThis was my dinner last night an organic salad. The waiter watched me fumble around with the chops sticks and brought me a fork and knife.  I did not give up.  I kept my composure and continued using the chopsticks.

I am determined to be a Chopstick Master.
